    • Hidden Generalizations : Phonological Opacity in Optimality Theory, Paperback by McCarthy, John J., ISBN 1845530527, ISBN-13 9781845530525, Like New Used, Free shipping in the US

McCarthy (linguistics, U. of Massachusetts, Amherst) points out that the sound systems of language contain structures of varying regularity, and that the study of those systems is simply a matter of digging up generalizations and is not particularly interesting. He shows that which falls short of categorical truth is the most interesting and probably the most useful study of such systems. Here McCarthy examines conditions in which an active phonological process is not evident in the speech signal. In doing so he finds that researchers on rule ordering in the 1970s had insights we may be missing today, and that we need to re-think the notion that there are no authentic cases of opacity. McCarthy proposes a new idea, which he calls "chain theory," and tests it against the phonology of several Semitic languages. The results are certainly not opaque.
