Nonlinear Wave Equations Perturbed by Viscous Terms, Hardcover by Maslov, V. P.; Mosolov, Petr Petrovich; Shishkova, M. A. (TRN), ISBN 3110152827, ISBN-13 9783110152821, Brand New, Free shipping in the US
The two Russian mathematical physicists explore the classical system of equations describing the motion of a one-dimensional compressible gas. The system consists of the one-dimensional Navier-Stokes equation, the continuity equation, and the equation of state relating to pressure and density. Usually energy estimates for equations of such type are obtained under the assumption that viscosity is constant, and the constants involved increase exponentially as viscosity tends to zero, but they have obtained significantly sharper estimates, and have succeeded in using them to obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of smooth (for vanishing viscosity) solutions of the classical system. They warn that it only works under the assumption that the viscosity is sufficiently small. The original Uravneniya odnomernago barotropnogo gaza , published by Nauka in 1990 has been revised and extended as well as translated, and an appendix added based on the article Elasticity Theory for Media with Different Moduli of Elasticity, published after Mosolov had died.
